The Down & Dirty on the Galveston B.B. Stone.

You know I have a collection of weird guitars. I know I have a blog. Sometimes I blog about my weird guitars.

I’ve written about my Galveston B.B. Stone before, and again more recently, but really I’ve only ever nailed down the whole saga of the Eagle brand… Not the origin of this specific model. (Check the comments on those posts too, people have reached out!) So I went back to the well and reached out to Örjan Jacobsson & Jerker Antoni again, hoping to finally close out the top trilogy of my wild axes.

Dewey Decibel FlipOut: A vintage-style sunburst electric guitar featuring an inverted S-style body shape, a white multi-pickup guard equipped with three single-coil pickups, a standard tremolo bridge, control knobs clustered on the lower horn, and a maple neck with a dark fretboard and distinctive headstock shape. Indy Custom FlyCaster: A bright yellow electric guitar with a custom modified shape combining T-style elements and sharp V-style bottom points, featuring a solid yellow finish, a black pickguard, two single-coil pickups, a standard bridge, and a matching yellow maple neck and fretboard with a pointed headstock. I’ve already gotten some nice seriously in-depth info about the process of creation from the makers of the Dewey Decibel FlipOut and the Indy Custom FlyCaster. I even drew the FlyCaster into one of the maze designs available in my second book and on merch, like this shirt.

I needed to get to the bottom of the impetus of the B.B. Stone once and for all.

I consider these three my twisted trio. I’ll reach for one of these or my New York Pro Star Gazer before anything else, typically.

I reached out to Örjan & Jerker once again to try and get the inspiration behind the square guitar shape.

Jerker sent over a chunk of his memoir, A Music Dealer’s Confessions, written in 2020, and it rules. Here’s the part that pertains to the B.B. Stone, straight from the source:

Eagle Instruments

JAM had the agency for very good sound cards from Korea in the late 90s. And when JAM was no longer allowed to buy Gibson and Epiphone from Luthman due to pressure from, among others, Estrad and others, Örjan and I started a new guitar brand, Eagle Instruments. I found a nice eagle online and fixed the logo that would be on the head and we also designed the shape of the head itself. The eagle I stole was actually a variant of Iraq’s state emblem. Haha!

During the Musikmesse in Frankfurt, Nysse and I got in touch with a very good guitar manufacturer in Korea called Unsung… We visited Unsung’s factory, which was located in Inchon, a port city not far from Seoul. The guy who was the sales manager, we became very good friends with during the Musikmesse in Frankfurt. He had a strange Korean name that I tried to translate because all Chinese and Korean names seem to mean something. He explained that it meant big brave stone. So when we were brainstorming and trying to put it together in English, it became Big Brave Stone. I ended up thinking that he should change his name so that he wouldn’t have that typical Korean name on his business cards that no one remembered anyway. I suggested the name B.B. Stone, and that’s what it was. He still calls himself that — several years after he left Unsung and started his own company, which of course is also called B.B. Stone.

So there’s your answer on the name, at least. Not a bluesman. Not a nickname for the shape. A Korean sales manager Jerker basically rebranded on the spot at a trade show.

There’s a lot more in what he sent, including warehouses full of unpaid-for Epiphone stock because Gibson stiffed the factory, a bass player named Hazze Wazeen who used to end shows by launching his bass into the air, decibel police getting talked into letting the volume slide, a Sam Ash rep getting told off mid-pitch by Hazze himself. It’s a fun read and super inside-baseball to the industry.

I asked Jerker point blank: What was the inspiration for the B.B. Stone’s shape design, the squared-off body with the deep double-sharp cutaways? Buddy Guy meets Van Halen? This is the one that started my whole weird-guitar obsession… I need to know. Right?

His answer:

I dont really remember – just wanted it to stick out! Like my Penis guitar!

There it is, the whole story.

This is a guy whose first wild design was built as a novelty prop for Swedish rock legend Magnus Uggla’s live show. (See the video below.)

He also sent me pics of a coinpurse-bodied Eagle Prick-U-Lele, the Violele, and an Eagle Metal Vee. Talking all that in, I guess “I just wanted it to stick out” is the genuine answer. It’s bruh’s entire design philosophy in one sentence. It certainly grabbed my attention!

I didn’t get the deep origin story I went digging for, but I think I got something absolutely honest. It’s proof that the guy behind one of my favorite weird guitars genuinely does not design anything that isn’t weird. How can I not have mad respect for that?

OK, I have posted my Halloween Playlists before… but there’s more. Someone asked for spooky songs on Threads today and it kicked me into Halloween mode. It’s basically October, right? I wish I could include the great Wat Tyler track “There’s a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He’s Satan.” It doesn’t appear to be available for streaming. I may have to settle for adding the original.

Holy cow, reddit’s r/punk and Facebook’s Oddly Specific Playlists stepped up with some killer suggestions! The list is currently at 85 tracks. Some fit more loosely than others… but close enough counts in horse shoes, hand grenades, and punk rock.

I like rock n’ roll movies. I’ve seen a bunch. I still need to see a lot of them, or it’s been too long to remember what I thought of them.

I have been making goofy ones lately.

The latest one is Contradictions / Companions and it’s made up of songs that contradict or compliment each other. I mainly listen to Amazon Music, but this one was fun so I copied it to Spotify too.

I have a bunch more weird ones. Sometimes I reach out to Oddly Specific Playlists on Facebook or r/punk for help. Some have a specific order, some are designed for chaos goblins who always choose random.

Christmas Playlists

Despite Halloween and Thanksgiving being more my favorite… I do enjoy Christmas & Christmas music, both traditional and decidedly not-so.

I resisted streaming for a long time, in favor of just popping mp3’s on to a thumb drive & listening in the car/truck. I’m still in a lot of remote areas, and I think I clung to a desktop setup for a while longer than the rest of the world.

Someday, someday, I will rip all my CD’s, corral all of my purchased mp3’s or FLAC files, & pop the stuff on some kind of server so I can call it up at will.

I use Spotify occasionally. I would use it more, but I refuse to pay for a premium account, and sometimes I swear songs vs. commercials are 1:1 if not 1:3. I refuse to pay for Spotify premium account because we have whatever all-encompassing Amazon plan gives you Prime and Amazon Music.

I’m still building my Amazon playlists… I may pay for one to move to Spotify lists over. Maybe. I’d rather just by records, CD’s, & downloads directly from artists.

I haven’t dipped into YouTube Music yet. I think I have 2 or 3 Pandora accounts, but they’re just frustrating these days when you can actively pick a song with other services.

I just reached out on a couple of FB forums asking for suggestions, and I’m still pouring through, but these are my playlists across different platforms…

I ‘m still adding/shuffling on the Amazon lists and they’re good for all-day playing. I might have to make one narrowed-down with my absolute favorites.

The Christmas Carrolls: "Jingle Bells"

The kids & I apparently have a band called the Creepy Kittys. While we haven’t released any official music, we have already successfully completed a minute-long side project. Here’s “Jingle Bells” by The Christmas Carrolls.

We were going to go a more traditional route, but Molly insisted on a bit of punk rock energy. I also wanted to go right into the song, but Ian insisted on an introduction.

There's so much room for activities!

It still needs a name. I haven’t officially decided. I have been calling it “the music room” or “the guitar room.” Both of those seem boring. Maybe this? I find it amusing but clunky.

I may make some videos of guitar shenanigans as a creative outlet. Not sure what direction they’ll take. I’m not a particularly good or technical player, but I can demo some gear or do some fun silly stuff. I do already have a YouTube playlist started for my guitar-related videos.

The Postitive Grid Spark amp & app have really made jamming quick and fun… they have a cool in-app video feature, but it’s not much different than recording straight-up with the phone’s camera.

I have been having a blast playing along to stuff on YouTube… from stuff from my old bands, to Black Sabbath, to Snuff, to the Ramones, and my new favorite song to play along to; “Bigger than Kiss” by Teenage Bottlerocket.

More setup inspires more setup. I need a way to store my physical media (mostly CD’s) so it’s easily accessible. I have a lot. Too many probably. I need to build some shelves and the stuff I’m finding online seems painfully expensive and not quite a fit. And I’d like to dump that all on a personal media server. I have a lot of stuff not available on Amazon or Spotify.

The next itch I can already feel will need scratching is some kind of recording setup. I’d like to layer stuff I can hear in my head, without the aid of a looper. I miss the days of a Tascam 4-track with a cassette tape. Maybe I’ll delve into a nice simple digital version of that.

The kids have guitars, ukes, and a keyboard too… and now we almost need drums and a bass or too, right?

At any rate… it’s important to have a creative outlet. Live isn’t conducive to me jamming regularly with a band right now. I only seem to do mazes when the inspiration hits, and I blog pretty randomly. Music is one more option for expression, creativity, and constant learning/exploring. I hope to foster the kids’ musical expression and drive home how important it is to remain creative themselves and appreciative of art in general.
